Review of The Dirty Picture

The Dirty Picture is not that dirty as the name sounds. Its based on a true story of Silk Smitha who was a Indian vamp artist; worked mostly in south Indian movies. Vidya plays the role of Silk Smitha in the movie and her character is also named Silk in the movie.

Reshma (Vidya Balan) is an ambitious, bold and confident lady who wants to work in the Indian film industry. She goes for a dance shoot and there she is spotted by a director who gives her a name Silk. She instantly gives the name Kida Singh (Rajesh Sharma) to him saying that “Silk to kide hi banate hain”. She has her first item number with her childhood favorite actor, Suryakant (Naseeruddin Shah). Since she is working with her favorite actor for the first time; she gets nervous and is not able to give a good shot. Suryakant gets angry and leaves the place. Silk follows him and seduces him; finally they shoot the song. After that Silk and Suryakant keep meeting and keep having bedroom encounters; she becomes his dirty secret. One night when they are about to make out Suryakant’s wife comes in looking for him and Silk immediately goes inside the bathroom and hides there. That time she realizes that for Suryakant she is nothing more than a girl for pleasure in bed. Heartbroken with this fact Silk leaves the house and has an encounter with Suryakant’s brother Ramakant (Tushar Kapoor). After sometime they become good friends and eventually he becomes the new found love interest in Silk’s life. A love affair with him also comes to an end when in a party Silk has a face-off with her new competitor. Ramakant is shocked with this behavior of Silk and he ends his relationship with her. After this break up, Silk’s life becomes problematic; she has no roles, no job and she is facing a financial crisis. Also Silk has few people in her life who dislike her; first is a journalist Naina (Anju Mahendru) who keeps writing bad things about her and tries to spoil her image. And then there is this director Abraham (Emran Hashmi) who feels movies don’t work with cheap skin show and hates Silk to his core of heart for doing cheap skin show in movies. But eventually Abraham is also attracted to Silk and starts loving her. One night he goes to her and spends the whole night with her; talking about her life, her past and then he confronts to her that he has started liking her. Silk’s financial problems have become larger than life and in order to earn money she goes to a director where she realizes that he makes porn movies. Before he could shoot her movie there is a police raid and Silk escapes from the place. Depression and the feeling that no one understood her; even her mother closed the door on her face; for some she was a dirty secret; the person who said he loved her also didn’t stand by her side and with all these thoughts she commits suicide. Before dying she bids a goodbye to Abraham. By the time Abraham realizes and reaches her house she is dead and that is where the story ends.

Vidya has given a power packed performance in the movie. She has played the character of Silk wonderfully. Other actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Tushar Kapoor and Emran Hashmi have also played their roles well but the whole movie is over taken by Vidya and after the movie I am sure everyone will remember Vidya’s character.

The best thing about the movie is the dialog written by Rajat Aroraa. Niharika Khan is the costume designer who has beautifully given that 70s look in the movie. The movie has been directed by Milan Luthria and as a director he has done justice to the movie. The songs of the movie are good.

A good movie to watch and enjoy. Good to see that Vidya has got away from the league of size zero. Over all my rating is 3/5.
